Although the foundational concepts remain the same, Microsoft has introduced several new security and compliance technologies that are now reflected in the renewal assessment.
In this article, I’ll share my SC-900 renewal experience, outline the key updates, and provide actionable preparation strategies to help you pass with confidence.
SC-900 Certification Exam Walkthrough
SC-900 tests your understanding about the Microsoft Products and basic security concepts.
You learn primarily about:
- Microsoft EntraID
- Microsoft Security Technologies – Azure Security, Defender XDR
- Microsoft Compliance – Purview | Compliance Management
- Security, Identity and Compliance Concepts
I’ll quickly review each one in brief.
EntraID
Microsoft EntraID is IAM and Directory Service. It is essentially your Active Directory but managed by Microsoft.
You are expected to know about EntraID and its capabilities overall.
With EntraID you can manage user directory, Authentication, Authorization and Overall Security Governance.
Your knowledge is tested on broad IAM Concepts – Authentication, Access Management, Governance and capabilities of EntraID utilized by companies.

Defender XDR
Defender XDR is a complete suite of Microsoft Security Products.
Essentially it’s a security solution for – Endpoints, Email, Cloud, Identity, Data and OT Tech
SC-900 makes your familiar with all the solutions Defender XDR Offers.
Expect some questions from this – mostly about testing knowledge about these products and actual use cases.
Microsoft Purview
Microsoft Purview is DLP Solution from microsoft.
It covers – Data Security, Governance and Compliance capabilites from Microsoft.
Overall, every solution from Microsoft has dependency and is integrated effectively across Entra, Defender and Exchange.
Purview content is updated in SC-900 and you can expect surprising questions to test your knowledge on Data Security. Mostly scenario based.
Microsoft Security Co-pilot
Security Co-Pilot is the star of the show. This is newly introduced in SC-900.
Security Co-pilot is an Agentic AI by Microsoft.
It integrates across Microsoft Environment – Entra, Defender XDR , Purview
Security Co-pilot is now introduced by Microsoft as individual product or part of License Suites.
This is quite interesting and more stuff to learn.
Expect questions from this particular thing – Security Copilot
SC-900 Exam Assessment Strategy
30 days is enough for this certification even with your day job.
If you can spend dedicated full day, 2 weeks is ideal to cover everything.
Don’t memorize rather understand the products offered by Microsoft and where it fits in business scenario.
