How to Change Nameservers of WordPress Website

In this Blog Post, I am sharing how you can change and update your Nameservers of wordpress website.

Nameservers are provided by the web hosting company when you purchase the following services

Examples of Hosting solutions like – Kinsta, Dreamhost, Cloudways, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure etc.

  1. Shared Hosting
  2. Managed WordPress Hosting
  3. VPS Hosting
  4. Cloud Hosting
  5. Dedicated Hosting

In this article, Dreamhost is our hosting partner.

For every hosting type there are nameservers assigned by the company, to help you setup your website and make it live on the Internet.

Sometimes, when you change web hosting provider or you want to migrate to different company, you need to change and update the present nameservers you want to use.

Also, If you want to use Security Solutions like Cloudflare or Akamai, you still need to change nameservers, to successfully use their services and point towards them.

  1. Log in to your Godaddy Account or any other Domain Registrar. Here, I am using Godaddy
  2. Navigate to DNS > Nameservers
  3. You will see nameservers added when set up hosting or if you want to update nameservers. In my case I am using dreamhost’s nameservers because it’s my primary hosting solution
  4. Click on “Change Nameservers” and update it with the ones which you got.

  1. In the above scenario, I am updating my nameservers.
  2. Click on ” I’ll use my own nameservers”
  1. Now, you need to login into your hosting provider dashboard to get nameservers.
  2. Here, My provider is dreamhost. If your provider is same, then you can follow the exact steps mentioned in this article.
  3. Navigate to > Websites > Manage Websites > DNS
  4. The UI might change but still the settings will be identical in future as well.
  5. As you can see my nameservers are currently in use. I was Using Cloudflare hence, cloudflare’s nameservers were updates.
  6. Now, I am changing and updating my nameservers.
  7. I need to get my orignal nameservers from dreamhost to update it. Copy the nameservers from the dreamhost dashboard.
  1. Visit Godaddy, and follow the initial step where you can change the DNS NS Records.
  2. Click I’ll use my nameservers and add the namservers which you have copied.
  3. Sample Namservers examples include – john.google.com marie.google.com ( your hosting solution will provide and will have unique NS )

  1. Click on Continue and Verify, to successfully update the nameservers.
  2. After you confirm, it can take upto 24-48 hrs to fully propogate and connect to updated NS.

Here’s how to change and update nameservers.
