How to Create a User in Microsoft Azure ENTRA ID

In this Article, you will learn to create a user in Azure ENTRA ID.

In simple, Microsoft Active Directory (AD) is now ENTRA ID in Azure Cloud Platform.

ENTRA ID is an IAM Solution by Microsoft, and is used by every single company across planet to manage and administer employee and corporate data.

Microsoft Active Directory is a critical IT Component and this is where user data is stored and managed.

Now, Let’s get to the Tutorial of Entra ID User Creation.

ENTRA ID New User Creation Tutorial

  • To Create a New User in > ENTRA ID, You need an Azure account and Entra ID Access to perform.
  • You can get Entra ID Access for various ways – Purchase Office 365, Purchase Entra PI and P2 License or Purchase any Micrsosoft Servic where you get IAM as a supplement.

After you have got access to ENTRA ID, this is how the Dashboard looks like.

This is latest and official Microsoft’s Newly developed ENTRA ID, as of 2024. Even now they are getting new capabilities for Azure Entra ID and other security solutions integrating Microsoft Co-Pilot.

Entra ID Home

This is ENTRA ID Homepage of my tenant, and you have various functionalities and features like:

  1. Identity
  2. Protection
  3. Identity Governance
  4. Verified ID
  5. Permissions Management
  6. Global Secure Access
  • To Create a New user in your organization or just for a test, in both cases it’s the same. Here I am creating for Cybernomadtv
  • Click and Navigate to Identity > Users > All Users
  • You will be displayed all the users which are already created. Here we need to add a new user in our entra id premise,

Entra ID Azure

  • Click on New User > Create New User
  • Refer the Image above to get clarity.

Entra ID User Setup

As you can see in the image above, To create a new user you have 4 basic steps:

  1. Basics
  2. Properties
  3. Assignments
  4. Reviw+Create

Simple, Enter all the required details of your user or employee which you want to add.

Identity Details Basics

  1. User Principle Name – write user name with your domain which is associated. for ex: [email protected]
  2. Mail Nickname
  3. Display Name
  4. Password
  5. Account Enabled

Entra ID USer Settings

  • Properties Section are the critical area, as you will create user’s important details and role assignments.
  • For Example, I have created a user called, ” Test Analyst” and have assigned to manager which is “Ahmed Abdul Nafey” .

Properties Section includes:

  1. Identity ‘
  2. Job Information
  3. Contact Information
  4. Parental Controls
  5. Settings

Fill in all the user details and information and proceed to ” Assignments” .

Microsoft IAM Roles

  • Here, I am assigning my user for a particular role in my Azure Entra ID Premise.
  • I have authorized and given the test user privileges of “Help Desk Administrator” – He or she can reset passwords for non admins and helpdesk admins.
  • Microsoft Entra ID have in built roles created by microsoft, Global admin being the highest privilege
  • Select your desired assignments and roles depending on organization’s policies.

Active Directory Final Review

  • You can verify and check all the details and confirm here to add the user.
  • Click on Create as shown in the picture above.

Entra ID USer Successfull

  • As you can see our new user has been added successfully in Entra ID.
  • Entra ID is a powerful IAM Solution in the market and is used wide spread.
  • Out of 10, 8 people do have some form of IAM which is Active Directory where user details and credentials. Making IAM as a hot target for hackers and threat actors.
  • IAM do possess critical information, and as cyber and tech professionals it’s our responsibility to protect each layer of enterprise security.
